TEDx: learn how to learn

23:25

Assalamualaikum dun-ya~

Alhamdulillah finished 4 tests for test 1~! Still has another one final paper, which is the Thinking Skill course. For all the -logy2 subjects, pathology, physiology, bacteriology oh anatomyy please be good to me! :)

Scrolling around the Youtube channel during free time make me come across to a series of TEDx talk video. I still remember the very first TEDx video that I've watched is about 'Whats veterinarian knows that doctors not.' There is a physician that admitting and explaining why being a veterinarian is tougher than being a physician or in other human doctor. She inspired me and opened my eyes wider about my field. Start from there I've becoming quite addictive to TEDx channel because, all the talk being presented is always inspiring people to become better and the presenter is the 'real' people who are not just talking based on their script.

This morning, I watched a video entitled Learn How to Learn by Barbara Oakley. At first, she explained a problem solving method that are applied by Thomas Edison and Daly. Both of them, when they come to face a problem about their invention, they will take one step back to rest their mind. Thomas Edison always having a bunch of keys inside his pocket for him to play while he is resting while thinking about his problem lightly. Same goes to Daly, he has ball bearings. This shows that brain need both 'forceful' focus and relax thinking to find a solution effectively. Thus, to make thinga clearer, Oakley shares about the effective ways of studying and learning that coincidently , I also apply some of the techniques and I think I could share with you :)

1. Promodoro technique

Oakley said, in studying, we couldn't put a target that, 'I'm going to finish this whole topic today'. And in reality, it is truly impossible. Even me myself couldn't do it. Finishing the whole topic does not guarantee that you understand and remember what you learn very well. In other word, the quality of revision is lesser than the quantity that you've revised. Its actually a waste of time when you need to re-revised what you've learn sooner or later, right?

So, what we can do is to apply this Promodoro technique which introduced by the Japanese. What you need is just a timer, any time can do. Every study session, set a timer to 25 minutes. Say to yourself that 'I'm going to fully focus on studying for this 25 minutes'. No smartphones, no surfing,  and minimise background music. Focus, and understand what you learn will ease you for memorising what you learn :) Then, take a short 10mins break and do whatever you want and let the brain interpret what you've learned before the next session! Your brain also need rest!

2.Test yourself!

Being in veterinary medicine study, need a lot of reading and memorising. Since we still a student who do not apply what we learn yet, it is quite hard to remember everything what we've learn, thus we tend to study everything at the last minute before the exam to make sure that we can remember what we've learn for the exam day. Of course, that method is truly stressful.

Oakley suggests to always test ourselves with any big or small test. Such as using flashcard, or doing any maths or physics or chemistry exercises in a approximate timing. By testing ourselves, it will strengthen our memory plus  we are helping our own brain to memorise too! For vet subjects, it always about understand and memorising. All those muscles, medicines, pethology of disease etc. So, I'm using the Quizlet apps to help me studying and filling my time wherever I go. It doesn't matter if you only do 5-8 questions, but the key is to 'always test youself' Always. Sikit-sikit lama-lama jadi bukit :)

3.Understand alone is not enough.

When you got the opportunity to have a group study, go ahead! Don't miss it. By having a discussion you actually can get more tips on how to understand a topic by the sharing among you friend! The truth is, it actually saves our time and energy instead of cramping ourselves all over to think of everything! teehee! I always use this, because I know they got more time to prepare for exam than me. Thus, when exam is around the corner, I will join any group discussion to gain more tips from them.

However, just oneee condition, you need to study that particular subject at your own first. ok? :)

So, that are all of my study tipss.. supported by Barbara Oakley presentation. Feel free to watch her video by clicking onto the link at her name. :)

Another 3years to go! Study hard and smart!
