Private clinic veterinary internship! Storiess Experience and Tips!

Assalamualaikum dun-ya~
Subhanallah, Alhamdulillah.

Sorry for a longgg leave from updating the blog.. people come and go without any new entry, I understand how it feel..  I apologies.. So here my longest entry hahaha :D

6 Days had passed for my first practical at the private clinic, Loving Animal Clinic, Sungai Petani. It is under-pressured, body aching, quite stress, happyyy, precious!
I cannot described vividly by words all my experiences during the practical. Everyday had to handle more than 10 cases, surgeries, consultation and more.

Okay the summary is like this
DAY 1
Cases: More than 10 + Consultancy
Surgery: None
DAY 2
Cases: More than 10 + Consultancy
Surgery: 3 Spay and Neuter Surgeries and 1 Laser surgery
DAY 3
Cases: More than 10 + Consultancy
Surgery: 2 Surgeries
DAY 4
Cases: More than 10 + Consultancy
Surgery: 3 Spay and Neuter  Surgeries and 2 Emergency surgeries

So that’s until day 4 and its goes on and on! It was really totally very hectic. You don’t have time to sit at all!.

Lets get into the operation theatre!

SPAY AND NEUTER SURGERY
The spay and neuter surgery usually taking 1 hour and half depends on the health and physical state of the cat or dog. So if the dog or cat doesn’t has tick or mites (kutu) the surgery will be easier because less bleeding will occur. Pendarahan yang banyak akan meningkatkan percentage of risk of the surgery, the animal might die.

But problem yang paling banyakkkk yang kena face is, overweight or obesed animal. Dog or cat that has obesity will reduce the working space for the doctor to operate the animal. Sangat susah tau bila nak cari ovaries asyik jumpa fat tissue. Because even the fat tissue also cannot be discarded during the surgery. Well, pet nowadays is being spoilt with food but less exercise…

waiting for this cat to fall a sleep before the operation

Oh ya, for every surgery, Fadh jadi first hand or bahasa mudahnya first assistant for the doctor. So, dalam operation theatre tu its just me and the doctor. For the first time, I was soooo nervous! For the first day of surgery which is the second day, 4 surgeries in a row and balik rumah terus headache sebab first time tengok bleeding and berdiri for a looongg time for each surgery. And by hook or by crook, I have to move on for the next day with my head ache.

LASER SURGERY
Laser surgery also on the second day. This is a case of a lutong with broken arm and the arm had been contaminated with bacteria. Eventually the arm had ‘died’ while the other part still functioning well. This surgery took 2 hours.

The lutong hand need to be amputated. Maknanya, tangan lutong tu kena kudung sebelah. The dead arm had been removed untuk elakkan kuman dari terus merebak. Kalau kuman dah sampai kepala, death might be the answer.

So untuk potong tangan lutong, we need to use laser and the scissors too for certain part. The laser is to reduce bleeding from happening. But for certain part such as ligament and tendon we need to cut manually because if we use laser it will take more time.

Well, there’s also emergency surgery that had been conducted such as animal that had been cut, fight, hit by car and others..

DAY 4

Day 4 sangat menyentuh hati. Ada seorang mak cik cleaner, datang bawa kucing dari tempat kerja dia. Kucing tu sakit mata, dah bengkak agak teruk. The conversation went as usual, until mak cik tu cakap dekat Fadh, “Mak cik ada 30 ringgit je ni.. cukup tak?”

On the spot, my tears almost roll down tapi kena tahan jugak daripada jatuh, I cant do anything except for smiling and wait for the doctor to answer. Then doctor cakap, “30 pun boleh…”

Imagine, she’s a cleaner and just brought a cat from her work place neither hers to the clinic even though she knew she might not be able to pay. But still, she done her part at least to help the cat, the money for herself is the second thought, not her priority.

My heart still touched and cannot forget her face and the atmosphere of the situation until now. Hoping for her to keep strong and safe hereafter together with the cat.

That is veterinarian life. The expenses for animal health is actually can be more expensive than human. Not every human willing to spend their money for something that will not give them any revenue. That’s why,  we will try to understand  and tolerate certain cases that we can help and support the client expenses.

DAY 5

Ku sangkakan panas hingga ke petang, rupanya hujan di tengah hari. Jangan nangis fadh! Haaa day 5 went excellently as usual.. Honestly, most and major of the non muslim client that came and tengok fadh handle and restrain dog macam biasa takde pa pe they will praise me for not being afraid and done my job well. Well, yang baik datang dari Allah, yang buruk itu kekurangan fadh. I’m not seeking for the appraisal, because myself still learning to overcome my fear toward dog.

Dog is more agile, active, curious and fear at the same time. Some dog can be excited when coming to the clinic but most of the dogs, they are afraid. That’s why you will see they are moving around, running, barking because it is their nature to be more energetic than cat. It is my job to calm them down and communicate with the client while waiting for the doctor to finish prescribing any medicine for the previous client.

Tapi pada hari kelima, ada seorang client muslim datang bawa kucing utk check mata(if im not mistaken, maaf banyak sgt case in one day). Then lepas dah check, doctor went inside untuk prescribe ubat, tiba tiba she said “You kenapa pegang dog tak pakai glove???? Lepas tu sentuh I pulak????”

Okay, ada ke fadh sentuh mak cik ni?? cool down fadh… relax.. senyum… jawab.. “Tak pa puan.. saya yang direct contact dgn anjing,, kalau saya tersentuh puan, its just the second contact.. puan tak direct contact dengan anjing.. setiap kali selepas saya handle anjing, saya pastikan saya KERING supaya puan tak perlu samak.. saya sahaja yang perlu samak..”
*senyum semanis manisnya sampai terlebih gula pun tak pa!! :):):):):):):):):):) air mata jangan keluar!

And then she keep on and on ask me,

“Samak baju semua tak??”

“Saya setiap hari saya samak semua baju, seluar, tudung, anak tudung, semuaa.. dan saya mandi air tanah.. “

spect pun kena sertu..

“Setiap hari??”

“Setiap hari puan,.. tak pernah miss”

“Solat masa kerja macam mana??”

“Saya ada bawa air tanah*sambil tunjuk air tanah dekat tepi poket beg* dan saya ada bawa baju dan seluar lebih.. setiap kali nak solat, saya akan samak dan tukar semua baju.. then selepas solat, saya tukar kepada baju kerja saya balik “ :):):):)*senyum lagi dan lagi

On and on. My chinese doctor pun dengar je la our conversation huhu…. But honestly, fadh tak(cannot) boleh nak explain semuaaaa benda kenapa kami(muslim veterinarian)  tak pakai glove when handling dog cases, etc on the spot… If you’re at my position, you will understand and know why I’m not wearing glove when handling dog cases unless when doing surgery, cleaning infectious skin or cut and other more cases that needed glove. If you need explaination, come and see me, we can discuss together :):):)

Tapi fadh sebagai seorang muslim, I know my responsibility that I have to keep myself dry , kering sekeringnya supaya other muslim client that came do not have to samak or having doubt..

Plus, handling dog and pig is part of our job almost everyday and we have to get use to it.

dog bite..

Persepsi, pemikiran semua orang betul namun berbeza mengikut situasi dan keadaan. You can’t expect everyone to fully understand and follow you, but living in society, we need to tolerate and TRY to understand and put on trust toward each other.

Fadh tau kalau fadh explain everything, she cannot accept everything in a second and I don’t want to start a war for my practical memory! Give her time and space.

Enough for me to answer her question and doubt. Terima kasih puan atas ingatan dan teguran :)

Panjang lebar citer hari kelima kan? :)

That’s the part of reality of a veterinarian that I’m going to face in 5 years time.. Scary pun ada.. honestly the makcik from day 5 made me quite phobic to face my very last day at the clinic.. takut jugakla kalau kena condemn lagi on my last day at the clinic.. mencabar fizikal dan mental yang still tak berapa kuat lagi ni huhu..

Tapi sokongan dari client yang lain pun banyakkkk to keep me going! :D

Bagi fadh, practical di private clinic is the most tough and under-pressure especially for us the first year student who still very lack of knowledge when we need to face every client that seeking for answer but we cannot give them and have to wait for the answer from the doctor.

So, here are some tips untuk menjalani practical di private clinic :)

1-Do  research and read a lot before you come for the clinic practical. Since you will face usual patients which are dog and cat, so you better to do your own reading about them. Sebab during your first semester, you are not going to learn anything regarding clinical lesson that can help you for clinic practical.. so you cannot depends on any lecture note at all. At least, from your own reading, you can have small conversation and explain  about what you know  with the client about what they don’t know hehe..

read read read!

2-First day and every day be early and sharp on time to start the day and after lunch time! Always be early!

3-Pakaian no need to be too formal. Slack trousers and smart polo t shirt is enough.. The client wouldn’t feel tense and  just relax when dealing with us. But you also can observe your doctor’s appearance that supervise you and follow their preference, either formal or semi formal..

4-Inform them you are coming in a week time. Try to call the doctor but usually they are too busy to pick up the call. Then, try to sms them saying that you are coming on the stated date, and ask for their working hours and stuff so you will know on what time you suppose to be there.

5-Rajinkan diri, find any work to do! Don’t show your tired face and always smile! Show your enthusiasm and help in anything that you can. For example, I always help in cleaning the operation theatre table, weighing scale, working table, utensils, and more.. Just search for anything that you can do.. ok?

What you can do...
disinfect the surgery kit..

clean the working table regularly..

observe the small creature called bacteria..

practice my right hand with the surgery clip since i am left handed

6-Ask on the right time. Don’t disturb the consultation between the doctor and the client. Let them having their time and listen attentively while you can calm down  the patient. Just relax yourself when facing the client. Grab any information that new to you and memorise them. For me that having a practical at a busy clinic, I don’t have much time to take out a note book and write everything, so I need to use my brain and memorise every info and write it down at the end of the day. And every spare time, ask the doctor about the client’s problem then the doctor will be more comfortable to explain to you in the absence of the client.

Well I think its enough.. you still need to face everything by yourself right?.. Every person got different experience, that’s make the world more interesting!

Terima kasih mama for giving me a lot of advices a week before my practical hee.. Thank you everyone for your support!

  2. My daughter wants to become a veterinarian when she gets older. She is doing a report in school where she needs to interview one. Would a veterinarian be willing to do a mini-tour/field trip for her? We would only be there about an hour I am thinking.
