Red. The only piece that I bought during recent Big Bad Wolf
because im afraid I wouldn’t finish reading all the book like before.
SYNOPSIS
This book written by Alison cherry depicted *ceh macam jawab exam* a girl named Felicity St. John living in Scarletville, a town
so-called as ‘redhead sanctuary’. People with red hair hold high status and
have a ‘red cred’ but its an unfortunate for who borned in brunettes, blondies,
and someone known as strawbie-blonde mix with red that living in this town. Those
who aren’t redhead are downgraded and have low society status.
One fine day, the town is celebrating their seventy fifth
anniversary of the foundation of Scarletville. In commemoration of the
celebration, the town held a pageant competition known as Ms. Scarlet, to crown
the best redhead girl in town. Felicity is said to born for the title. Her
mother, Ginger, is one of the ex-Ms.Scarlet, and she really aim to be the first
mother-daughter pair of Ms.Scarlet in Scarletville. She moulds and trains Felicity
into a person who definitely will win the title since at very young age.
Luckily, Felicity born with smart brain and talented in art,
thus, together with her copper-red hair, her ‘red cred’ status climb up high.
She has guaranteed bright future ahead. She is perfect in the eye of
Scarletville people, she has the hottest guy in school as her boyfriend, two
redhead girls best friends, becoming cocurator for school art exhibition, and
more. In this year Ms.Scarlet, she’s
chosen as one of the contestant and the one that people look forward most. However,
she is keeping a dreadful secret. She is an ‘artie’-a person who dyed their
hair as red, in exact term, she’s also a strawbie.
The unfortunate event started when Felicity’s stylist
daughter and a brunette, Gabby, found out Felicity’s true hair colour. She
started to blackmail her over and over. Felicity, who afraid to death about it
followed each and every Gabby’s requests, even the one that need her to
sacrifice her boyfriend. So, to make things short *for my blog huhu* Felicity
decided to go against Gabby’s request that ask her to speak up about the town
being unfair to non-redhead population. Felicity made a plan to instead reveal
about Gabby’s mother illegal business as stylist for non-redhead. However, the
situation turning upside down when she on stage. Felicity instead revealed her
secret as a strawbie and an artie. This is because, she felt empathize when she
saw Gabby’s lil sister who root for her since day one and Felicity don’t want
her life to break into pieces after her speech.
Ginger absolutely furious. Her dream smashed. At the end,
Felicity didn’t won the Ms.Scarlet and face her real life as a non-redhead. But
still, she is admired for being strong-willed and have her own stand to admit
who she really is. The end…
LANGUAGE
Generally, the language is easy to understood. It isn’t too
high and isn’t too dragging which I like about it. I like the one which
straight to the point. Still, the author use specific word to describe specific
feelings, expressions, and situation, for example, ‘scowling’, ‘bizarre’, etc,
which may need you to look up on dictionary.
PLOT TWIST
This story actually have a lot of plot twist, I like. Each
Gabby’s request seems to be impossible to be fulfilled, but the author narrates
well on how Felicity trying hard to make it real. Plus, the author make the
situation worsen when Ginger, the mother herself asked Felicity to just obey Gabby’s
instructions in order to keep the secret instead of, she, as a mother, suppose
to help Felicity to get out of the problem. I felt so angry when read those.
Since that, Felicity thought Ginger doesn’t understand her situation of being
blackmailed. But, there’s actually an enormous twist, after the competition
finished, Ginger admitted that she is the one who passed the strawbie gene,
herself is not a real redhead thus she actually understand how Felicity felt
but she managed to keep it well not like some
people. Ginger’s seventeen years effort of preparing Felicity as the next
Ms.Scarlet is totally wasted. It is a heartbroken moment, you know when a
mother work so hard for you. But, Felicity still deserve a free life from secret
that she yearn for. It’s a mixed feeling.
DOWNFALL
I expected more for the ending, but it didn’t turned out the
way I wanted. The ending is too short. Which at the end, she got a better
boyfriend who also in art field and support her from the beginning for being
who she really is, Jonathon. However, her mother still not fully resolve with
her, I really want to see the mother and daughter become good again. I was
hoping the town do something from Felicity’s bold action of speaking about the
unfairness. But I guess the book need to be thicker.
ALL IN ALL
I glad that at least Felicity become an inspiration for
Scarletville to have their own standing. And I gather that kind of courage too.
To not become easily manipulated by society. Be who you want to be, have
courage to voice out what you want and what you don’t.
Ciao.
